Sea Turtle Conservation

Conservation and protecting sea turtles in their habitats

Human activities have endangered the lives of sea turtles; without us disrupting their habitats, they have an average lifespan of 100 years. To play our part in conserving marine biodiversity, we have developed a 5-year marine biodiversity conservation program via a strategic collaboration between the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) of University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and our Port Management and Maritime Services subsidiaries, MMS, focusing on conserving and protecting the sea turtles.

Over the years, UMT-SEATRU has developed strong partnerships with relevant governmental bodies, NGOs, and research institutions from around the globe that share the same passion for sea turtle conservation.

Our aim is to contribute to the protection and preservation of sea turtles through collaboration with UMT-SEATRU and a sustainable and strategic application of the Centre of Excellence (COE) module for the conservation of sea turtles locally and globally. MMS is supporting the development of the UMT-SEATRU Centre of Excellence on sea turtle conservation.

  • Improve facilities management of the research station.
  • Increase active participation in the volunteering programme.
  • Enhance participation and involvement in the outreach programme.

Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteer/Outreach Programme

Through its outreach programme, SEATRU continued to raise awareness on sea turtles through educational daytrips to the station and Kem Prihatin Penyu where people are equipped with the theory and practical knowledge of sea turtle conservation. Additionally, through the Employee Participation Programme (EPP), MMS opened the volunteer opportunities to the rest of the MISC Group of Companies, where employees can experience a once in a lifetime opportunity of the sea turtle conservation seven-day programme. One of the feedback received was knowing that participating in the EPP has increased their knowledge on sea turtle and its life cycle. This practical exposure will not just raise awareness but also make them appreciate this incredible creature.
